If you need a large SUV, consider the 2025 Ford Expedition and the 2025 Chevrolet Suburban. Both have spacious cabins with three rows of seats and offer lots of power and towing capabilities.

Design and Exterior Features

Ford has updated the Expedition’s styling for 2025, giving it a more modern and refined look than the previous model year. The entry-level Active comes with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, and a power liftgate, while the Platinum trim offers power-deployable running boards. If you want off-road features, the Tremor has an off-road-tuned suspension with a 1-inch lift underbody skid plates and front tow hooks.

The Chevrolet Suburban starts with 18-inch wheels and LED headlights, but you have to step up from the base trim to get a power liftgate. A hands-free power liftgate is available as an option. The off-road version of the Suburban is the Z71, which has a front skid plate, tow hooks, and standard four-wheel drive.

Both the Expedition and the Suburban have large cabins with three rows of comfortable seats.

Seating and Cargo Space

With the Ford, you can choose between the regular Expedition and the longer Expedition Max. Both have room for seven or eight people, depending on whether you have a second-row bench seat or captain’s chairs. Behind the third row, you’ll have 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space and up to 108. 5 cubic feet with both rows folded down. The Max offers up to 123.1 cubic feet of cargo space.

The Suburban offers seating for nine, although most versions have room for eight. Opting for captain’s chairs reduces this to seven. Behind the third row, there are 41.5 cubic feet of cargo space, but this can open up to 144.7 cubic feet with both back rows folded down.

Premium Interior Features

Inside the Expedition, you’ll have power-adjustable front seats in the Active trim. Higher trims all feature heated and ventilated first-row seats and heated second-row seats.

The base Suburban trim comes with cloth upholstery and tri-zone automatic climate control, but higher trims feature leather upholstery and heated front seats. Driver’s seat memory settings, a heated steering wheel, and heated second-row seats are all available.

Engine Options and Power Output

The Expedition has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with two different outputs. The standard output develops 400 horsepower, and the high-output version gets 440 horsepower. Both outputs work with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The base powertrain for the Suburban is a 5.3-liter V-8 with 355 horsepower. A 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower comes standard on the High Country trim but is available on other trims. A turbodiesel is also available.

Towing Capacity and Payload

The Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,600 pounds when equipped with the available tow package, while the Expedition Max can tow up to 9,000 pounds. The Suburban can’t match the Expedition’s towing power; it’s limited to 8,300 pounds with the Max Trailering Package.

Fuel Efficiency

The most efficient version of the Expedition is the rear-wheel drive. It can get up to 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models have an EPA rating of 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

The Suburban’s gas engines are slightly less efficient. Rear-wheel-drive models will get up to 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

The Suburban has a standard touch screen measuring 17.7 inches and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. It also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you don’t get Google Built-In.

Both SUVs offer wireless charging, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. A 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system is an available upgrade in the Expedition, while a Bose CenterPoint 10-speaker audio system is available on higher Suburban trims.
