The Bass Bunch American Flag

On November 21, 1985, Mr. James Morris Bass, owner of Jim Bass Cars and Trucks, proudly raised a Giant American Flag over his Sherwood Way car dealership in San Angelo, Texas. The event was attended by all employees and guests, as well as the Angelo State University ROTC and the Angelo State University Jazz Band. The flag was moved to its current location at 4032 Houston Harte Expressway in 2004. The flag is twenty feet by thirty-eight feet, the largest flag displayed in West Texas. The flagpole is precisely one-hundred feet tall and weighs four thousand pounds. It is topped by a thirteen-inch brass ball and a three-foot brass eagle, the eagle’s wingspan measuring thirty-six inches. The ball and eagle serve double duty, functioning as a decorative flagpole cap and a weathervane. The unit rotates on a bearing with the flag, allowing the eagle to face the flag continually in the direction the wind is blowing.

The flag flies 24 hours daily and is a staple of the San Angelo Skyline.
